Evidence and reason
We take data and careful thinking seriously when asking which interventions actually help.
We use evidence, reasoning, and community to explore how to benefit others as much as possible.

Effective altruism is a field of inquiry and a social movement that explores the best ways to help others.
Its aim is to identify which of the world's problems are most pressing, to develop the most effective solutions to those priority problems, and to encourage individuals to take responsibility for putting those solutions into action.
To determine which problems are the largest, most neglected, and most solvable, it draws on scientific evidence and rational reasoning.
This way, we can direct our limited resources toward creating the greatest possible positive impact.
EA Principles
We take data and careful thinking seriously when asking which interventions actually help.
We focus on problems that are large, solvable, and still under-addressed.
We aim to find the truth, not to defend our current views. Updating beliefs in light of new evidence is a sign of intellectual honesty, not weakness.
We care that the actions we take are measurable and can be evaluated with concrete data.
As Effective Altruists, we focus on the cause areas that affect the greatest number of people and animals, where we can drive the most change, and which are most neglected.
We examine policy, corporate, and behavioural changes that could improve conditions for very large numbers of animals.
We try to understand how relatively low-cost interventions can matter in enormous problems such as preventable disease and extreme poverty.
